I love writing books. I have a whole drawer full and some are pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. It's a genre I've gravitated to for a long time. What I don't enjoy is trying to sell them. It's cutthroat, it's who you know, it's no fun. It's certainly not as fun as writing the books.
I've written about art models, journal writing, reading tarot cards, and staying in the present. I've written adult novels and children's stories. I once wrote about breaking a wild horse and about traveling alone and camping throughout the West. I have a book for junior high kids about the history of English. I've written two young adult novels and several books of poetry.
I write these things, put some effort at marketing them, give up after awhile and start writing another. That's where my heart is. My drawer is getting crowded. Just recently I started writing a book about baking with alternative flours. Not only is my desk a mess, but you should see my kitchen!
The following books
are the ones I'm putting some real effort into getting published, and Someone
Stole My Outhouse did get published by High-Lonesome Books. It's
a collection of my home improvement columns.
Across the Mountain is an illustrated book of my poetry, published by me and a friend. It was one of those wonderful hands-on, done-at-the-kitchen-table adventures. Literally at the table. That's where Peggy does her drawing.
The other book, Not A Rock Out of Place: Notes from Two Mounain Paths, is still in manuscript and looking for a home. The experience of writing Not a Rock was like entering a high creative trance. Whenever I left the house, I couldn't wait to get back. It was like having a delicious lover waiting for me.
I'm now working
on another book with my writer friend, Anne Hillerman called
Aging Parents: Insights from the Journey. It deals with all the
different stages we go through with our aging parents-from the moment we first
realize our parents are getting old to the moment they die. It's a collection
of people's experiences; if you want to contribute, click here on Aging
Parents and go to our site.
